Some tips for choosing the right photographer.

Choosing a wedding photographer is a potential minefield, so we thought we would offer some advice to help you notify the things to look out for. There are several steps that we recommend taking in regards to choosing somone that will succeed in taking beautiful images and be a joy to have around on your wedding day.

  1. Check out the website. If the images are not to your liking, or the website is unprofessional in appearance, it could suggest that missing. is a suitable eye for detail that you may come to expect in the taking and presentation of your own photographs.
  2. Work out a budget as to how much money you are willing to spend on your photographs. There is a wild vairiance in fee structures - some charging as little as $400 - some as much as $7000+. As you would expect, there is generally a massive difference in image quality and experience between the two, but many mid-priced options will satisfy your needs with beautiful imagery and a comfortable bottom line. Sadly many businesses will ramp their fees up as soon as the word 'wedding' is mentioned.
  3. Meet up with the person that will be doing your shots. Beware of the company that hires several contractors, pays them a small fee and charges out to you at professional rates. You can never know who, or what you will get. This goes for many Photo/Video packages as well, where you are locked in to whomever they decide to send. It may seem like a good deal at the time, but be prepared for potential disappointment. Photography is an artform and this philosophy does nothing but to commercialise your wedding day for their profit.
  4. Folio Check - look up close at photographs supplied for viewing, making sure images are clear and crisp and full of emotion. Beware of an abudance of illustrative photography - placing the subject in a scene, ie archway, below large structures and the like. This type of photography does not neccesarily capture emotion - you get treated as an object, not a person. Commercial photographers can use this method as their people skills may not be up to standard. We believe that emotion is the crux - you wouldn't like being shot like you were a bottle of shampoo? Look for imagery that captures laughter, natural expression, spontaneous and open emotion. If you can find these traits, you're nearly there.
  5. Character check. When you meet a potential candidate, look beyond anything photographic and let your heart do the walking. There are many that will allow their ego to get in the way of clean communication. Ask questions to see if the photographer is open to your suggestions and see the response. It is important that you can convey what you are looking for, and equally important that the message is received loud and clear. Most importantly, after your departure, reflect on whether you have enjoyed the time spent. It is imperative that you felt no nervousness through your meeting. If you felt stress or attitude, then this person is not for you. After you add all of the pressure and timing constraints that are inherant on a wedding day, you MUST feel comfortable in the company of the person taking your shots. You don't want to look stressed on what should be a happy, loving and joyful day.

Good luck in choosing your wedding photographer. We hope that whomever you decide upon, will satisfy your needs - These images will hold a lifetime of memory in a single day. Choose wisely.
